What to Visit?

  • Plaza de la Patria Crowned by the Exedra that marks the geographic center of Mexico, in this beautiful square the main civic activities of the city take place.
  • Morelos Theater In 1914 it was the seat of the Sovereign Revolutionary Convention where Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Álvaro Obregón and other generals met to discuss the actions to be taken against the usurper government of Victoriano Huerta.
  • Temple of San Antonio It is perhaps one of the most beautiful temples in Mexico, with its neoclassical style and its only tower in the center. Blessed in 1908 and ceded to the sacred order of hermits of San Agustín. It is also known as the "church of brides" because of the large number of weddings held there.
  • José Guadalupe Posada Museum The property is located in the neighborhood of Encino and dates from the early nineteenth century.
  • Square of the Three Centuries Space that covers green areas and the old buildings of the train station.

  • Festival of the Calaveras One of the most important around the Day of the Dead in our country. Adorned always by the "Catrina".

Typical Food

  • Fried Tacos. Stuffed with chicken and pickled pig skins.
  • Birria. Meat cooked in its juice, steamed and served with tortillas and consommé.
  • Red pozole. Flavored broth served with pork, beef or chicken, corn and vegetables.
  • Lechón Tacos. Stuffed with Roasted pork.
  • Buñuelos. Flat sweet puffs decorated with sesame honey.

¿Qué Saber?

What to Know?

  • The city was founded in October 1575 to house merchants who traveled the so-called "Ruta de la Plata" (Silver Route).
  • Its original name was "Villa of Our Lady of the Assumption of the Hot Waters", name derived from the abundance of thermal waters in the area.
  • By 1584 the population was only 16 soldiers, one commander and two neighbors.
  • Renowned Individuals José Guadalupe Posada (1852 - 1913). Mexican painter and engraver who satirized the Porfirian elite and was the creator of the famous "Catrina".
