Real del Monte

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the Otomíes called to this place "Maghotsi", that means "high step", for being the region of more height that crossed those who went to Tenochtitlan.

After the conquest, in 1577, it received the name of Real del Monte, the most productive mining center in silver of the Viceroyalty.

The production generated by the mines of the Purísima Concepción, Difficulty, La Rica, Dolores and San José Acosta was such that Real became one of the most important mining towns in the world. The prestige and distinction were also an element that the inhabitants of New Spain desperately wanted, especially aspired to be "anointed" with the visit of the very kings of Spain in these overseas lands.

After the Independence, in 1824, English adventurers arrived at the place and took on the task of mining exploitation, transforming the town both in its architecture and in its gastronomy, which is why today Real del Monte is known as the " The most English of the Magical Towns. "

The English adventurers left Mexico something so intangible and alive that vibrates and ignites passions ... Football! Real del Monte is awarded to be the first place where the British played on a court a match of what is now the national sport and show par excellence.

The English heritage of the place is palpable when visiting the Museum of Medicine, a British hospital with more than 100 years, which shows the advanced health services during that time for their community.

The cemetery or pantheon, keeps the remains of more than 200 British and all the tombs are oriented to Europe, to its roots in England ... except for one: that of an Englishman who despised his origin, and requested that his tomb be oriented, in protest, contrary to the others, turning their backs on the old world.

Enjoy eating the famous pastes, a type of puff pastry inherited by English miners. And dare to try the famous tachuela in a bar: a refreshing drink prepared with port, sherry and brandy.

To visit Real del Monte is to meet a beautifully remodeled mining town, with visits and walks that awaken the romanticism of the search, and find in its small shops the treasures of silver craftsmanship and beautiful wood carvings.
