Cultural construction

A quiet city full of attractions. In its historic center are buildings such as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Government Palace, both with great wealth and historical significance. Account with museums like the one of Anthropology, the Beloved Nervo and the one of the Popular Arts. Of course, you should not leave without visiting the "Amado Nervo" Open Air Theater and La Loma Park.

What to Visit?

  • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Its construction began in 1750 and it was finished until 135 years later, in 1865, and it features a beautiful quarry façade of neo gothic style.
  • Government Palace Built in the nineteenth century, in this monumental building you can admire the murals painted by the artists José Luis Soto that represent important events of the National History.
  • Anthropology and History Regional Museum Built in the eighteenth century, this colonial mansion houses now invaluable objects and vestiges of the pre-Hispanic cultures that inhabited western Mexico.
  • Amado Nervo Museum This famous poet was born in this house, where many of his belongings are exhibited, including furniture, documents, pictures and books.
  • Popular Arts Museum There are five exhibition halls where you can admire the most representative pieces of the popular art of Nayarit.
  • Santa María del Oro Lagoon Ideal place to practice aquatic sports, such as ski and windsurf, and where you can take amazing pictures also.
  • Church of la Cruz de Zacate Founded in 1540, this church houses a miraculous cross that never has been restored, as many say.

What to do?

  • Tepic National Fair Celebrated in March, there are official, cultural and social activities and exhibitions, as well as artistic events where many national singers and bands perform their shows.
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe As in the rest of Mexico and many parts of Latin America, this festivity takes place on December 12th each year, and it consists on religious processions, masses, traditional dances and serenades, fireworks and typical cuisine.

Typical Food

  • Pozole A typical Mexican dish that consists on a spicy broth seasoned with pork or chicken meat, and ears of corn. It is served with lettuce, radish and onions on top of the broth.
  • Gorditas Thick corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and/or different stews.
  • Tamales Corn dough mixed with lard, and stuffed with pork meat or other kind of meat in a spicy green or red sauce, and finally wrapped up with corn leaves or banana leaves to be steamed.
  • Seafood Any type at any moment, and prepared in different ways, they taste always delicious and fresh.

What to Know?

  • Tepic was founded by the conquistador Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán with the name of "Santiago de Galicia de Compostela," capital of the Colonial territory of Nueva Galicia.
  • This villa was upgraded to the level of town in 1811.
  • In 1917, once the Mexican Constitution was promulgated, Nayarit became a state and Tepic was chosen as its capital city.
  • Renowned Individuals:
  • Juan Escutia (1827 – 1847) One of the so-called Heroes Children or cadets who defended the Military College at Chapultepec during the US intervention in 1847.
  • Amado Nervo (1870 – 1919) Poet, diplomat and journalist.

Popular Craft

  • Ojos de Dios, literally meaning "God’s Eyes" these handicrafts are wooden crosses wrapped up with woollen threads.
