TRIBUTE TO THE PAST

In the State of Mexico, five ethnic groups coexist that contribute all their artisan wealth: Tlahuicas, Otomies, Nahuas, Matlatzincas and Mazahuas.

Approximately 80% of the territory of Mexico is dedicated to crafts. Popular art has given this state a privileged place, not only at the national level, but also in international settings, since many works produced by Mexican hands have been recognized at fairs and exhibitions outside the country.

It is said that Mexican pottery is probably the oldest artisan activity that takes place in the territory.

In this branch the Matlatzinca community stands out, who produce genuine works of art. The group received Nahuatl influence and, with the passage of time, elements of European and even Eastern origin were added, which led to an aesthetic improvement that continues to this day.

The municipality of Metepec is renowned for the skill and artistic creativity of its artisans; demonstrated in the traditional earthenware that is used in many mexiquenses kitchens, which can be elaborated of clay or glazed. With rudimentary techniques, the working hands give shapes and colors that invite visual enjoyment.

On the other hand, goldsmithing takes life and harmony in the hands of the Mazahuas, heirs of an old Mexican tradition. The main area where metal is shaped is San Felipe del Progreso, the Mazahua mexiquense center. There, metal is basically worked in two ways: embossing, technique where it is highlighted and shaped when scraping it; and the chiseling, where it is embellished with the blow of a hammer.

There is another metal embellishment technique, which is mostly used in jewelry: it is called filigree; it consists of taking advantage of the ductility of gold and silver to be able to make fine and long threads that are joined by welding to create true works of art. Goldsmith work also occurs in the municipalities of Nezahualcoyotl and Naucalpan.

Basket weaving and creation of textiles are artisan activities that the Otomi people in the State of Mexico have skillfully and skillfully developed. Thousands of years, ancestral techniques and knowledge inherited thanks to oral tradition, have given the necessary expertise in the activity of basketry for the development of beautiful and useful crafts based on the craft of weaving plant fibers. The places that stand out in this work are Toluca, Tenancingo, Temascalcingo and Jiquipilco.

In the manufacture of textiles, an important part of the Mexican economy resides, besides that in this activity an interesting phenomenon can be observed: the coexistence of so dissimilar techniques in the elaboration of garments and other articles. The use of looms of pre-Hispanic origin, others more from the time of the colony and large industrial machines coexist in the development of this sector at the state level.

The Mexiquense rebozo is a good example of the prehispanic, Spanish and oriental mix. This garment, characteristic of Mexican women's clothing, is made by artisans from the communities of Calimaya, Tejupilco, Jilotepec and Tenancingo.

It is worth noting the ancient skill of the Otomi for the preparation of the beautiful Temoaya rugs, whose hand knotted technique gives it a unique distinctive. The work that is dedicated to the creation of a rug can take a month of consecration and effort to the artisan, for this reason they are unique and valuable pieces.

The cherry and pyrotechnics are also two activities closely linked to the artisan work of the State of Mexico. The municipality of Tultitlán excels by the ingenuity that is printed to the creation of all kinds of pyrotechnic tricks, such as judas, pigeons, colored lights and castles. In addition, it supplies these products to almost the entire country.

In the creation of artisanal cereals aromatic and decorative candles are important, especially those of fruit and religious forms. The municipalities that have developed this popular art are Amecameca, Tenango del Valle and Toluca.
