Abundance of grass and history

Called the "city with stone face and heart of silver", it was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1994. It has been the scene of historical moments such as the "Toma de Zacatecas" during the Revolution, and today, it is home to intricate alleys, beautiful museums, high squares and a peculiar urban geography captivating.

What to Visit?

  • Zacatecas Cathedral Built between 1731 and 1752 by Domingo Ximenez, this beautiful church features a magnificent baroque façade. Its southern tower was constructed in 1785, while the northern one was concluded in the early twentieth century.
  • Eden Mine In its interior you can see tunnels, ancient tools, sculptures, a chapel and also the Minerals Museum.
  • General Enrique Estrada Park Framed by the arches of a colonial aqueduct, this beautiful public space features a musical fountain.
  • Francisco Goitia Museum Here you can admire masterpieces of this famous painter, as well as those by other local artists.
  • Gonzalez Ortega Market Ideal place to try some dishes of the delicious local cuisine, and also to acquire some handicrafts to remember your visit.

What to do?

  • International Folklore Festival It takes place on July, and it includes more than 300 shows performed by local and international artistic groups that display and communicate thus their well-preserved traditions.
  • Musical Autumn in Zacatecas It takes place in October with the participation of local and national or international musicians.
  • Zacatecas National Fair It takes place in September each year. Besides its first level bullfighting cartel, there are cockfights, rodeos, amusement rides, traditional music, cuisine and dances, as well as cultural events.
  • Funicular Railway You can take a ride in the funicular that crosses the Historic Downtown. From that height, you can get amazing views of this precious capital city.
  • La Bufa Hill Where you can practice rappel, climbing or zip-lining.
Comida Típica

Typical Food

  • Birria Goat meat slowly baked in its own juice or consommé seasoned with chili, and it is served with onion, cilantro, lime and tortillas..
  • Gorditas Thick corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and/ or different stews.
  • Asado de boda (Wedding dish) Pork meat covered with a delicious mole sauce that is prepared with different kinds of chili, peanuts and, even, chocolate. This unique stew is served with rice, beans and tortillas. Enjoy your meal!
  • Tamales Corn dough mixed with lard, and stuffed with pork meat or other kind of meat in a spicy green or red sauce, and finally wrapped up with corn leaves to be steamed. Don´t read it, just try it!
  • Mezcal Alcoholic beverage made with a similar cactus than the one that tequila comes from.
¿Qué Saber?

What to Know?

  • The original village was founded on September 8th, 1546.
  • In 1585, King Felipe II recognized this village with the title of "Very Fine and Loyal Town of Our Lady of Zacatecas."
  • On June 23rd, 1914, the troops of Pancho Villa defeated here the Federal Army that kept loyally attached to the usurper Victoriano Huerta. This famous battle is known as "The Taking of Zacatecas," and afterwards the military triumph of the Mexican Revolution was assured.
  • In 1993, the Historic Downtown was recognized by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage of Mankind.
  • Renowned Individuals:
  • Víctor Rosales (1776 – 1817) Hero of the Mexico Independence War.
